Case Report: #GLP011 The Turkey Kumburgaz UFO Case
The Kumburgaz Turkey UFO case (2007,2008, 2009) is arguably one of the most interesting cases in modern history regarding ‘Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena’ (UAP). The case involves multiple witnesses and twenty five separate videos filmed over the Sea of Marmara. The events were all captured from the bay area of the Kumburgaz region of Istanbul, Turkey. Murat Yalcin Yalman, who filmed the videos, worked the night shift near the Yeni Kent facility located on the shore of Kumburgaz which gave him a good view of the bay. His videos were first released by the SIRIUS UFO group, and oversaw by the researcher Haktan Akdogan. This case made the mainstream media in Turkey and across the world. The videos were confirmed to be genuine and not a hoax by multiple official organisations including the National Council for the Study of Science and Technology.
Case Report: The Turkey Kumburgaz UFO case

Incidents: Over twenty-five videos were filmed (that we have found) from the bay of Marmara, Istanbul, Turkey in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and filmed by Murat Yalcin Yalman – a night security guard. Yalman was able to reach out to the Sirius UFO group and researcher Haktan Akdogan who released the videos. In the various videos, there is close up footage of what appears to be lights, a physical craft(s) and in some cases – ‘entities’ are said to be visible in an open-top (sun-roof) hole in the centre of the objects. The unique aspect of this case was not only the clarity of the UAP, but also the repeated behaviour of the craft which reappeared in three consecutive years in the exact same location over Marmara Sea, Turkey. After the May of 2009, there were no more sightings.

Fourth Video – Yellow-Orange Light – 30/07/2007
The fourth video (part of the 2007 series of events) also occurred on Monday the 30th of July, 2007 and again was filmed by Murat Yalcin Yalman via a Mini-DV Canon DM-GRI-A-NTSC-3CCD- 20x optic from Kumburgaz area, although not confirmed as to direction (buildings are in this video). The video shows a timestamp of 05:14am local time (02:14am GMT) lasting just over a minute. The camera is zoomed out throughout and fixed on the filmed object to show a yellow-orange light as it slowly moves across the sky.

However, as the videos progresses, the lights disappear instantly in vertical sequence which suggest the bottom two yellow lights may have been reflections of the upper two.

Upper section has anomalies – a black round nodule on right on upper surface of craft, a slight protrusion that is lighter in colour in direct centre of upper surface and darker surface on left of craft. Surface of upper section appeared reactive in places, however camera artefacts and light sources might account for this.

– At 05:20am (02:20am GMT), the camera captures four reddish lights in formation over the bay. The pattern matches the hump of the upper section of the UAP. A dog can be seen and heard barking from the beach in the direction of the four reddish lights.

Possible explanations:
Anomalous technological vehicles must be considered, given the appearance and apparent ability to hover stationary. A hoax was also considered in this case as a possibility. Other possibilities might be that the objects were ‘drones’, ‘sailing boats’, ‘reflections’, or even a ‘cruise ship’ which all fall under the misidentified category.
Analysis:
The raw videos were presented to, and analysed by, the Turkish state sponsored ‘Scientific and Technology Research Board of Turkey’ and also the ‘TUG National Observatory’. They reviewed the original footage and analysed the frames, the objects, and even the moon cycle.
The examination of these frames showed the following conclusions:
– The images were recorded in digital NTSC format by above-mentioned camera.- The date on the video indicates that the recordings were made during 2007, 2008, and 2009.
– The footage images of the object which visibly have a certain configuration are not computer animations, special video effects or studio re-created images or models. The footage is genuine.
– The first observation made from the footage is that some of the images were recorded in nighttime sky at a certain altitude from the horizon. The footage also covers images of moon in some parts which proves that the video was shot in nighttime and open air. But, the fact that digital date display’s showing AM in certain frames and PM in others, raises suspicion about the validity of the time in which the recordings were made.
– Since in some parts, there is no other object that can be featured as a reference in the close-up frames and no observable differences were found on background examination, the actual location, distance, dimensions and nature of the objects could not have been determined.
– Through the examination of shootings of multiple dates, it’s a strong possibility that 2-3 different objects were captured. However, it’s difficult to determine whether the objects are moving or not. Their movement is slow even if they do so.
– The light reflection from the left side of the object which is seen on August 10th shootings is not produced by the moon. At that time, the moon was in a phase that was pretty close to the “new moon” phase and located approximately at a 10 degrees proximity/angle to the horizon. Moreover, the image processing analysis conducted on some part of the footage revealed that the center of the object has the same density as its background, namely is of a transparent nature. – The reflections of light on the objects are sometimes caused by moon which was in a convenient location at that time, and sometimes produced by some other sources of light.
According to researchers at the time, the original film cassettes were also studied by technicians from Japan, Chile, Brazil, and Russia. No evidence of a hoax, fraud, or manipulation has been successfully demonstrated, leaving the case as unidentified – seemingly, therefore, whatever the objects were in those 25 + videos were actually there in real time.
Misidentified cruise ships and boats
While some debunkers have attempted to assign cruise ships as an explanation, recent research suggests that the theory doesn’t add up, according to former F-16 fighter pilot and researcher Chris Letho. Letho analysed the videos and case and calculated the objects size, horizon distance, plus visual angles from the Marmara Sea. He concluded the logistics of a cruise ship didn’t match the reported UAP. Additionally, the triangulation of the UAP in most video cases was calculated to be too high to be a cruise ship or boat, by other researchers. Alternatively, in the fixed/stabilised camera videos (available online) we can see that the objects are motionless against a black background in the vast majority of videos. The motionless aspect of the UAP could also discount the ‘small-boat theory’, given that even on calm waters/oceans floating objects will still move and rock around slightly – for example, see the small boats moving in the foreground in videos twenty-four and twenty-five. Additionally, despite the mass mainstream media coverage in Turkey at the time, no person has ever come forward to state that the objects/boats belonged to them or that they were sailing off the coast in the middle of the night.
From an analytical perspective, the Turkey Kumburgaz UFO case is unique with regards to the clear and multiple video footage obtained. Through this case, we also have sequential data which displays behavioural patterns, times and dates. We see all of the twenty-five video encounters/incidents at night-time/early morning (with one in the late evening), which is in keeping with the wider range of Ufology data that suggests UAP often appear at nigh-time.
We also see another significant pattern displaying the encounters are around water – in this case the Marmara Sea. The Sea of Marmara itself is a small sea with an area of 11,350 km2 (4,380 sq mi), and with dimensions of 280 km × 80 km (174 mi × 50 mi). The sea has a greatest depth of 1,370 m (4,490 ft). How significant the Sea of Marmara is to potential UAP has still not been explained. No connection to nuclear facilities or weapons has been linked in this case.
The UAP behaviour and psychology
The behavioural pattern of the UAP is interesting. As stated, the UAP are hovering motionless for long periods of time – again a trend from wider UAP research. Interestingly, either the Turkey UAP return to the same location within three separate years, or potentially they may not have ever left (consider anomalous time-dilation), or also they may have a base underwater. These, however are speculative, and we simply do not have the data to verify such hypotheses.
Whilst researching the behavioural patterns across 2007 and 2008 gives us rich, repetitive, detailed data, in 2009 however, the pattern is broken and the sightings discontinue past May. Overall for example, in 2007 there are 8 encounters, in 2008 there are 14 encounters, but only 3 in 2009.
If we consider the ‘infection model/lighthouse theory’ by Dr. Garry Nolan that suggests there is a neuro-anomalous link between anomalous phenomena and specific-susceptible individuals with enhanced Caudate-Putamen nucleus, then it may have been Murat Yalcin Yalman who filmed the encounters with whom the UAP were linked. Therefore when multiple other people started filming and witnessing the UAP in video 25 (Sunday, 17th of May, 2009), the neuro-anomalous link might have been broken and the pattern ended. Again, this is highly speculative and not something which can be proven. Additionally, we don’t even know that the UAP were even aware or cared about human presence and filming.
In 2009 there were witnesses of 8-10 people that included Dr. Roger Leir who also witnessed and verified the UAP. Dr. Leir was present during the filming of video 26 and confirmed that as the UAP turned it was similar to the ‘Roswell’ shaped craft (more boomerang shaped)- rather than a traditional disc. He stated the moon was very bright that night and reflected of the metallic UAP. Through visual observation and looking at the monitor, he said he could see there were three ports on the craft – one in the centre and two on either side. In the middle port there were the ‘bumper sticker Grey Aliens’.
Average times and date
Case encounter times and an average have been calculated. Here we have documented below the first recording times of each of the twenty-six videos. Then we have calculated the average time of first recording and analysed the results.

When calculated for average, we found that 04:36am local time – (01:36am GMT) was the result for ‘first appearance’ given available video times. We must consider this is a crude estimate for multiple reasons. Additionally, June was found to be the month with most recorded activity videos. June: 8, August: 7, May: 6, July: 4.
- However, we must note the distinct possibility that significant data is undoubtedly missing from our analysis. Sightings may have occurred prior to filming, and on other days when Mr. Yalman wasn’t present. Additionally, we do not know the entire length of encounter as in many cases the videos fade to black while the UAP are still in the sky. Therefore, we should simply consider this a rough estimate from within the limitations of the case – for example we don’t know which nights Mr. Yalman was/wasn’t filming in those months and years – we don’t have verified documented evidence of when the UAP weren’t there. What the calculation does indicate is that the vast majority of data was collected in the early morning.
What the crude case analysis does show, is that there are behavioural patterns. The UAP appeared at night across three years, 2007, 2008 and briefly in 2009. Full bodied craft are seen at night, but not during the daylight – UAP are replaced by lights as the sun comes up.
The ‘entities’ are visible on some occasions but not in all videos, meaning that whether part of the craft or not, they are dynamic (they move).
The UAP appears across May, June, July and August however there are some witnesses/researchers who claimed these months are extended earlier and later.
The UAP was very active in the June of 2008 and within those early mornings between 06th of June to the 12th with sightings almost nightly. Also noted, towards the end of a yearly cycle (2007 and 2008), the UAP did not appear for a semi-lengthy period. For example – the UAP goes away for 12 days from 12/07/2007 and then appears one final time on the 24/07/2007.
The same pattern is repeated during 2008 – the UAP goes 59 days without appearing from 04/07/2008 until it appears again on the 30/08/2008 and 31/08/2008 before ending the yearly cycle until 2009.
As stated earlier, the pattern in 2009 is different to 2007/8 so we don’t know the yearly behavioural pattern of that year. Again, we need to stress this only based from the data we do have, which certainly might not be representative of the holisitc behavioural datasets.
In summary, the UAP cycles came in waves across the three years and also within sub-clusters within those years. There is seemingly a link to water, and to that specific area over the Marmara Sea, and to time and dates also. Unfortunately, at this point we simply do not know what this phenomena is, what it wants or what its intentions might be.
We need more data to improve data sets and better understand intention through behaviour.
Conclusion:
1). AATIP classification: The UAP seemingly displays, ‘anti-gravity’, with the ability to hover without any discernible means of propulsion.
2). This UAP case is lacking in-depth supportive data to be considered reliable. More data is needed.
3). The very limited possibility of hoaxed videos cannot fully be ruled out.
